Summer of the Monkeys 4?
In this chapter, Jay Berry and Grandpa went to the library to get a book about monkeys so they know how to catch them. Grandpa found out that monkeys like coconuts. When they went to the store, they got a whole half bushel of coconuts and the store manager thought he was crazy. When Jay went and bought a thimble, a shaving mug, and some ribon for his family, there was a girl that asked him if he had a sweetheart. Jay thought she had a lot of nerve to ask him that. He turned her down. BOY, WHAT WAS HE THINKING?!?!?!?! Well, anyways, on the way home, Jay got to drive the buckboard, a carrige, through a stream. When Grandpa and Jay went to get a drink, the monkeys traded Jay's beanshooter, his britches, and his gunnysack full of traps for his bushel of coconuts and the ribbon. When Jay looked up, he was amazed by how the monkeys decorated the trees with ribbon. At home that night, there was a big storm that shook the house. Daisy was scared so she came into Jay's room and told him that the Old Man of the Mountains was pointing his stick at their house and was smilinng which meant good luck.

How much is a bushel? How much would a bushel of coconuts cost? Remember what we talked about at the store yesterday- it costs more to ship produce in than it does to buy produce that is in season. What kind of premium do you think would be atatched to coconuts in the 1800's in the Ozark Mountains? Do coconuts grow there?
ReplyDeleteWhat is this, 20 questions or something? I'll have to get back to you on that one.
ReplyDeleteI see we need to work on math too. That wasn't 20 questions my dear, only 4. Man! So much to teach you.
