Summer of the Monkeys
In Summer of the Monkeys, the main characters are Papa, the father, Mama, the mother, Daisy, the sister, and Jay Berry, the brother. The plot is in the Ozark Mountains, which are in half of Missouri, and in the cantral of Arkansas. The Ozark highlands, covering nearly 47,000 square miles is by far the most extensive mountainous regoin between the Appalachians and the Rocky Mountains. The time is in the summer of the late 1800's. I feel that the auther's writing is good. You can create a mental picture of what's going on in every sentence. I can picture myself in the boy's shoes by pretending that I'm going out with my dog to hunt for some monkeys. I can imagine a jungle around me and pretend to be a fourteen year old looking for a cow.

Good first entry. I know you don't feel totally comfortable with this format but as time goes along it will get easier.
ReplyDeleteWhat does the author write that creates an image for you? Were you able to look up any photos of the Ozark mountains?
If you were in Jay Berry's spot, would you have tried to follow the monkeys or would you have been too scared? I think I would have gone as long as I had a dog and a gun.
I see you got the phrase "The Ozark highlands, covering nearly 47,000 square miles is by far the most extensive mountainous regoin between the Appalachians and the Rocky Mountains." from Wikipedia. We need to talk about what plagerism is.
Ouch! Busted for plagirism. It's been a long time since I've read the book, so I look forward to starting it later today. My question for you is, do you think that there is a difference between a 14 year old today and a 14 year old at the time this story was written. Give me two examples to back up you opinion.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is a difference between them. I think that the difference is that a 14 year old back then went hunting and worked hard (chop wood, plant seeds, etc.) A 14 year old today would sit on the couch all day and watch TV if he could and he wouldn't go outside unless he was required.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. The physical life of a 14 year old was harder back in the 1800's. They were required to mature much faster than today. In fact, there are several accounts of 16 year olds taking on the responsibilities of providing for their families- some even marrying and starting out on their own by 16. It is my belief that in the 1800's, 14 to 16 year old were the transition ages for turning from a child into an adult. Today I think that transition has culturally been moved back to between 18 and 20 years old.
